DOTr, PPA guarantee congestion-free Manila ports
21 AUGUST 2022, MANILA— Department of Transportation Undersecretary Elmer Francisco U. Sarmiento and Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Officer in Charge-General Manager Francisquiel O. Mancile visited and inspected the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) and the Manila North Harbor to ensure efficient port operations and uninterrupted supply chain activities at the local and global levels.
With the continued reopening of the economy, MICT is set to strengthen its position as the country’s premier port through capacity expansion from 3.3 million to 3.5 million Total Equivalent Units (TEUs). The company also presented its Cavite Gateway Terminal (CGT) pioneering project which offers alternative means of transporting containers through barges directly to the Tanza, Cavite Terminal. CGT encourages cargo businesses to take this initiative to minimize road traffic congestion along the cargo truck trade route from North Harbor to areas in Southern Luzon.
Major improvements at the MNHPI-managed North Harbor Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) will also be done to guarantee passenger comfort and convenience. The PTB was handling annual passenger traffic of more than 4.5 million pre-COVID.
From these developments, Sarmiento sees orderly and congested-free Manila ports, especially this coming holiday season. He reiterated the President and the Transportation Secretary’s call for safe, convenient, and world-class passenger travel and affordable port-related services.
